Geriatric Doctor – Geriatric Consultation

Geriatric doctors affirm that advancements in geriatric medicine make healthy aging possible

Our geriatric doctor is dedicated to promoting healthy aging and ensuring a high quality of life throughout this process. With advancements in medical science, many conditions once considered inevitable with aging are now preventable and treatable. Unfortunately, many patients are unaware of this until their symptoms have significantly progressed. Our geriatric doctor is board-certified in geriatric medicine and has undergone specialized training in preventing, diagnosing, and treating conditions unique to older adults, known as geriatric syndromes. These syndromes include, but are not limited to:

Geriatric doctors are skilled in addressing the social factors that can hinder effective treatment of medical conditions. They are knowledgeable about community resources that can enhance quality of life as we age. Additionally, they can assist with challenging family decisions, such as advanced directives and driving assessments. If you or a loved one are experiencing difficulties related to these issues or simply need a comprehensive geriatric evaluation and guidance for maintaining a healthy lifestyle, we invite you to request a consultation. We also provide this service to all Texas residents through our telemedicine program.

Older adults have unique healthcare needs that can complicate their medical care. Over half of individuals aged 65 and older have three or more medical conditions, such as heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, Alzheimer’s disease, or high blood pressure. Managing multiple health issues in older adults can be challenging, even for experienced geriatricians. For instance, prescribing medication for a patient with several health conditions is complex. A drug that may help with one condition could exacerbate another, and using multiple medications can lead to problematic interactions and side effects.

What is a Geriatric Doctor?
A geriatric doctor, or geriatrician, is a medical professional who specializes in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases and disabilities affecting older adults. Geriatricians are primary care doctors with advanced training in the complexities of aging.

To become a geriatric doctor, a physician first completes a residency in Internal Medicine or Family Medicine, followed by an additional one or two years of fellowship training focused on the medical, social, and psychological issues pertinent to older adults. As the population ages and people live longer, this specialty is becoming increasingly crucial.

With individuals over the age of 85 being the fastest-growing demographic, and centenarians becoming more common, geriatricians provide specialized care for those aged 65 and older. Much like pediatricians cater to children’s needs, geriatricians address the unique needs of seniors. They approach each patient’s care individually, utilizing their expertise to meet the specific requirements of an aging population.

Many seniors may attribute their health issues solely to aging, but these problems can often be related to illnesses or conditions that are not age-related. This underscores the importance of consulting a geriatrician.

Geriatricians go beyond simply diagnosing and treating physical problems; they gather comprehensive information about a patient’s lifestyle, community, family, and medical history. They also tend to spend more time with each patient, scheduling longer appointments to ensure that older adults have the opportunity to address all their health concerns. Generally, geriatricians excel in providing primary care, emphasizing wellness and preventive health while managing chronic conditions.
